A truly amazing experiment! A small magnet will float over a superconducting disc that's chilled with liquid nitrogen. You can read more about the experiment, check out the safety precautions, and see more cool pictures HERE.
We located a small manufacturer of superconducting pellets right here in town. You will need to supply your own metal thermos for transporting the nitrogen, a local source of liquid nitrogen, and observe all safety precautions when transporting. We get our liquid nitrogen from a local welding gas supplier. University science stores are another possible source.
The kit includes: 1 superconducting disc about 1" diameter, an excellent instruction manual, a convenient styrofoam container(good for
holding liquid nitrogen during the demonstration), 1 pair of plastic tweezers, and one 3/16" NdFeB magnet. If you want to try levitating other shapes and sizes of magnet, any of our small gold-plated NdFeB magnets will perform very well.
This demonstration MUST be performed by an adult, and gloves and safety glasses must be worn.
